A landmark live performance event for the community about the Novocastrian response to disaster and change
In the year of the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake, Tantrum Youth Arts supported local teenagers and emerging artists to respond to moments of monumental change, bringing Novocastrians of all ages together to take pride in the city’s shared resilience. Building a positive future for Newcastle by learning from the past, ready for whatever shake ups may come along (which may include global pandemics!!!)…
The Shake Up took over Newcastle Museum across the last two weekends of June 2019, with a FREE live performance event for the community mixing theatre, art, live music, food and more.
After coming up with the concept, Chris enlisted acclaimed Sydney-based company Branch Nebula to co-produce The Shake Up, given its expertise in delivering ambitious live arts events that place community members at their centre. With Chris facilitating an ensemble of teenagers and Lee/Mirabelle supporting local emerging artists to create their own short works, The Shake Up provided young people with a creative framework for ‘training in change’ and sharing their perspectives on the major shifts that have shaped Newcastle’s past, present and those that may influence its future.
